Build Effective Research Skills This Summer

Academic success requires effective research skills.

But there’s a lot to that, isn’t there?

To be a good researcher, you have to have the ability to critically analyze your sources. Is this website reliable? Is the person who authored this article a trustworthy voice? Does the argument being made in this essay hold up to scrutiny? Is it a useful support for my thesis?

Speaking of sources, how do I cite them properly, anyway? What style guide am I supposed to be following–and do I even understand what a style guide is? My teacher gave me a site called NoodleTools to help me, but it’s confusing. What do I do about that?

As a student, these are all questions you have to be able to answer to competently research a topic.

And gathering sources is just the beginning! Let’s say you’ve managed to gather some great ones. You’ve figured out how to paraphrase them properly. You can cite them.

But do you understand how to use them effectively in your writing? Can you construct an essay or paper that will support your thesis, utilizing your research? Can you make a sound argument and back it up?

If research-based projects and assignments stress you (or your child) out, summer is a fantastic time to work through some of the challenges.

Set up a session with one of our caring volunteer tutors. Sessions are one-on-one and last an hour. We tailor them to the needs of every individual student, meeting them where they are.

And don’t forget: at MAD4YU, tutoring sessions are FREE.
